Overview

Prosthetics and Orthotics is a dynamic healthcare profession that combines clinical expertise with technological innovation. Prosthetic and Orthotic Professionals assess and evaluate patients, prescribe custom-designed devices, and fabricate and fit orthoses (braces/splints), prostheses (artificial limbs) and prescribe Assistive Mobility aids.

These professionals provide essential services to persons with neuro-musculoskeletal, orthopedically disorders and disabilities. Their work encompasses service delivery for the management of work-related disorders, amputation, podiatric conditions, fractures, sports injuries, age-related disorders, tendinitis, musculoskeletal pain, congenital anomaly, aesthetic restoration, Pet Prosthetics and orthotics and more. 

Prosthetics and Orthotics Professionals play a vital role in comprehensive pre and post-surgical patient management and promote community independence. Over the years, their contribution has been significant in humanitarian crises, competitive sports for persons with disabilities, and technology-based rehabilitation.

The BPO programme at KIHT involves both didactic lectures and clinical education and training. The course is designed to focus on:

Eligibility Criteria

For Indian Students

  1. Must have passed the two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by the Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka State, or any other examination recognized as equivalent.
  2. Subjects required: English as one of the languages, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology.
  3. Minimum aggregate of 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology combined.
  4. Individual pass required in each subject: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology.
  5. For SC/ST and Category-1 Candidates, the minimum aggregate required is 45%.
 

For SAARC/NRI/Overseas Students

  1. Must have passed 'A' level conducted by any Boards/Councils/Intermediate Education bodies established by their respective countries.
  2. The qualification must be recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system in science by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences or the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  3. Must have studied English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology as optional subjects.
 

Lateral Entry

  1. Candidates who have completed a diploma in Prosthetics & Orthotics approved by the Rehabilitation Council of India are eligible and may be admitted directly to the 3rd year of the BPO course.
  2. Candidates must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics as optional subjects.
  3. In-service candidates can complete internships at their parent organization.
  4. Admission is subject to seat availability in the third year.

(4 years of academic study + 6 months of mandatory internship)
